Pastoral care and social programme Pastoral care is of the greatest importance at Acorn International Summer School and all staff working with us are highly experienced at caring for young children aged from 7 – 12 years. From the minute your child is collected at the airport until the minute they board the plane to go home our staff will supervise everything they do. Everyone who works for us is also first aid trained.
The boarding facilities are divided into separate accommodation for boys and girls and we endeavour to mix the nationalities within the bedrooms so that your child is given the best chance to speak English in an informal setting. We know that this may be your child’s first experience staying away from home and this is why we ensure that all of the bedrooms are cosy and welcoming and that we have a dedicated group of pastoral carers who are on hand 24 hours a day to help your child should they feel homesick, want to make a phone call to you or just want to play games!
The social programme is always very busy and we find that with younger children this is the best way to help them settle in quickly and make lots of friends. Every evening there will be organised activities that will range from craft activities and sports to excursions to local attractions or BBQ evenings. All children will be involved with these activities between 7pm – 8.30pm.
Communication We feel that communication between children and parents is important and as such, after supper and between 8.30pm – 9.00pm your child will have supervised free time when they can use internet facilities to email friends and family or can make and receive phone calls. We do ask parents not to contact their children too often throughout the day as this can lead to feelings of homesickness and can also disrupt the child’s lessons.
